Meeka

The thing about Moroccan food is that looks can be deceiving. Tagine is basically a stew, and they don't look that beautiful, but they can taste exceptional. They can also look a bit small on the table, and you think 'there is no way that is enough food' but believe me, it will be.
Always stay for the donuts.

Address: 360 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Moroccan

Price range: $$$

Must try: the lamb tagine

No. 4 Blake Street

I have been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and was dazzled each time. Service is cheeky during the day and polished at night. The food is beautiful at all times of day. Most evenings are various forms of degustation. Thoroughly recommended.

Address: 4 Blake Street, North Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$ (dinner)

Must try: all of it

Bistro Felix

Every now and then I dream of this salmon and risotto dish...

My sister and I have both taken our Dad here on separate occasions with the intention of choosing from the moderately priced lunch menu, yet somehow we always find ourselves buying his lunch from the very expensive and extensive full menu. It's pricey, but somehow you don't ever regret it.

Address: 118-120 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$

Must try: the salmon and risotto

Hobart Street Deli

This is the type of place locals want to keep their own little secret, but the Hobart Street Deli not only has a really interesting menu and good food, it is also directly opposite a gated park that is just perfect for small children.  Winner.

Address: 45 Hobart St, North Perth

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: haloumi and potato cakes

Pancakes @ Carillon

Pancakes as a special treat brings so many great memories back to me as a child growing up in the 80s. Now I bring my own children here, sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for lunch - but always for pancakes. They do sweet and savoury, and breakfast is what you would find elsewhere, except with pancakes instead of toast. Awesome!

Address: Level 3, Carillon Arcade, Perth City

Cuisine:
 Pancakes

Price range: $

Must try: old school lemon crepes

Itsara Thai

The food here is so beautiful to look at, it's almost sad you have to eat it. Luckily it tastes as amazing as it looks. Actually, Itsara is just a winner all round.

Address: 25 Stirling Hwy, Nedlands

Cuisine:
 Thai

Price range: $$

Must try: duck curry

Matilda Bay Restaurant

Matilda Bay is a counterpoint to the claim that you can't have a good view and good food. It's expensive and very posh, but the food is top quality and thoughtful and makes you want to lick the plates (but you can't, because it's too posh). Lunch specials are still top quality but more affordable. and if you're lucky, you might see a dolphin.

Address: 3 Hackett Drive, Nedlands

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$

Must try: Crepes with Grand Marnier

Breakfast @ Subiaco Hotel

Breakfast at the Subi is a bit of an institution -- just as long as it's not on a football day, when the normally full and exciting menu is reduced somewhat. All the flash new renovations should only make the food taste even better.

Address: corner Rokeby and Hay Streets, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $

Must try: Moroccan brik pastry

Ruby's Restaurant at the Roundhouse

It's surprisingly expensive for a Balcatta pub and the food and service can be a bit hit and miss, but there is a lot to like about Ruby's and if it was my local, I'd probably be quite happy.

Address: 401 Amelia Rd, Balcatta

Cuisine:
 Pub grub

Price range: $$$

Must try: the brownie dessert

The Subi Hotel

A range of starters from the Subiaco Hotel

Admittedly, it's been a while since I visited the Subi for dinner, and they have had some significant renovations done in the last year, but the Subi Hotel has always been an institution and it only ever seems to improve with age.

Address: Corner Hay and Rokeby Roads, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$

Must try: my go-to dish had always been the Subi Plate but they no longer offer it, guess I will have to find a new favourite

Caffissimo West Perth

It's coffee, it's freshly made rolls and baguettes, it's a chance to rest for a few minutes while you're out and about in West Perth. Uncomplicated food with friendly staff.

Address: 73a Colin Street, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: freshly made lunch rolls

The Hyatt Cafe

Of the three separate 'kitchens' at the Cafe, the dessert buffet somehow ends up being everyone's favourite. Waffles made fresh to order anyone?

The buffet at the Hyatt Cafe is enormous but that doesn't mean the quality is compromised. You will certainly pay for the privilege and you should only bother going if you have a decent appetite, but you could easily eat your weight in fresh seafood. Only bring the kids if they are adventurous eaters with hollow legs.

Address: Inside the Hyatt, 99 Adelaide Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$

Must try: the dessert buffet

Oishii Japanese

It may be located within a food court, but that doesn't mean you should dismiss this great little Japanese takeaway place. It's consistent, quick and tasty, and the little serves of salad and fruit you get with sets are always appreciated. Dine in at the Food Forum and let the kids run free on the indoor equipment.

Address: Cambridge International Forum, Cambridge Street, Wembley

Cuisine: Japanese

Price range: $

Must try: takoyaki (Octopus balls)

Wild Fig Cafe

It's quirky.
The food is quirky, the decor is quirky, and yes, some of the staff are a bit strange too.

Address: Corner Brighton Rd and The Esplanade, Scarborough

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: Eggs on Fire

High tea @ C Restaurant

It's a gimmick but it works, and the view from the restaurant on the 33rd  floor is definitely unique in Perth. Service often lets down C Restaurant, even though the food is consistently good (albeit expensive). The High Tea is very nice but I wouldn't go in a large group and I wouldn't bother bringing the kids.

Address: Level 33, 44 St George's Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 High Tea

Price range: $$$$

Must try: petite fours, the iced tea

Walter's River Cafe

Walter's is an unpretentious cafe with nice food to take the family out. If you sit in the undercover outdoor area you can watch the kids play on the nearby equipment. If you don't have kids, you can sit and enjoy the view of the river.

Chapels on Whatley

They serve bread with practically everything, even the Thai Beef Salad

Chapels is an intriguing fusion of many different things. It serves high tea in gorgeous pots, it has kimchi in about half of its dishes, it has a shop out the back, it serves Aussie breakfasts and Asian lunches and so much more. If you visit, be brave and order something unusual.

Address: 196 Whatley Cres, Maylands

Cuisine:
 Modern/Asian

Price range: $

Must try: desserts and cakes

Jane Brook Winery

The 'from the valley' platter

The menu has expanded ever so slightly since I visited a few years back, but if choice isn't your thing, then this is the place to go. But it doesn't actually matter what you choose, this is fabulous, fresh share platters with as much as possibly sources locally. Great to graze on as you share a bottle of wine. Kids are also welcome with their very own 'kiddies basket'.

Address: 229 Toodyay Rd, Middle Swan

Cuisine:
 Winery

Price range: $$

Must try: share platters

Fortuna Chinese Restaurant

I have been eating at Fortuna Chinese Restaurant since I was about seven years old and without a doubt it is my all-time favourite. I will happily drive for half an hour for their special fried rice. It is typical Aussie-Chinese, with peas in the fried rice and fluorescent orange sweet and and sour sauce but I love it. Take away and dine in.

Address: 66 Scarborough Beach Rd, Scarborough

Cuisine:
 Chinese

Price range: $

Must try: special fried rice and Mongolian Lamb

Black Toms

Pork belly and crackling: not for the faint hearted

During the day it is full of business people, doing deals over oysters and expensive wine, but it is still a great place to stop for lunch (if you can find a place to park) or dinner. It has a reputation for seafood but the menu covers all manner of beasts.

Address: 27 Ord St, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern/Seafood

Price range: $$

Must try: Pork belly

Breakfast @ Canvas (Fremantle Arts Centre)

Given its location in the leafy grounds of the Arts Centre, itself within the bohemian and funky streets of Freo, you wouldn't expect that Canvas is anything but out-of-the-ordinary. With a breakfast menu that is different and possible fairies in the garden, Canvas is worth the journey.

Address: Fremantle Arts Centre, Finnerty Rd, Fremantle

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: red Shakshuka

Bollywood Rest.O.Bar

It's got a really weird name and more neon than Vegas, but Bollywood is a lot of fun and the food is good too. Great for groups, as all Indian restaurants are, it's also good to see the staff having a laugh, even if it is at customer's expense.

Address: outside Event Cinemas, Liege St, Innaloo

Cuisine:
 Indian

Price range: $$

Must try: chicken caffreal salad

Les Bistro des Artist

The pan-fried gnocchi is rich, rustic and beautifully simple

It has one of the finest pedigrees in Perth, with chef  Alain Fabregues and
patissier Emmanuel Mollois. But if that's not enough, it also has a bunch of awards and some
pigs trotters in the food. The food is genuine French bistro fare, which means savoury and meaty, and perhaps a little salty.

Address: 424 Hay St, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 French

Price range: $$$

Must try: gnocchi

The Stanley - Wine Bar

I wish there had been small wine bars like this before I had kids, when I would have had the time and opportunity to appreciate them. The Stanley is laid back and cool, and if you can grab an armchair you may never want to leave. Food onsite is very limited, but you can request burgers from Flipside next door to be delivered to your table.

Address: 294 Cambridge St, Wembley

Cuisine:
booze only (and some cheese and crackers and nuts)

Price range: $

Must try: Flipside Burgers is next door

Pata Negra

The very famous squid ink paella is not the prettiest dish you will ever see, but many say it should be on your
foodie bucket list.

Inside it feels like you are visiting your (slightly drunk) Aunty who still lives in the 1970s while outside there is a fabulous garden with lights strewn in the trees. But you are there for the food, which is amazing and the best way to experience it, is to let the chef decide for you. Bring your loose waisted pants and a sense of adventure.

Address: 26 Stirling Hwy, Nedlands

Cuisine:
 Tapas

Price range: $$$

Must try: silverbeet, kale and caramelised onion
